Provincial
funding cuts and a new, elementary curriculum are
having a major impact on our children's classrooms.
Teachers are faced with larger class sizes, few
classroom assistants, less money for workbooks, and
a more rigorous curriculum which must be covered in
the same amount of time. As a result, there is
little "in class" time or material available for
practicing the concepts that are taught during
school hours. More and more homework is coming home
at a much earlier age.
Parents want to see their children succeed, and
are willing to do whatever it takes to meet this
goal. Most parents however are not educators, and
are not familiar with the elementary curriculum.
They do not fully understand what the ministry
expecations include, nor do they have the tools or
the time to put together activities and lesson
plans that reinforce curriculum concepts taught at
school.
